It is partly due to postpartum hormonal remodeling combined with under-nutrition and stress. The sudden changes in mood, tears, irritability, insomnia and anxiety are all quite natural, says Dr. Denis Slinkin.
Dr. Denis Slinkin will note that in case of postpartum depression these symptoms become more pronounced and prolonged. They may also include suicidal moods, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, thoughts of harm to the child. If any of these symptoms occur, it is essential to seek help urgently.
ADVICE ON HOW TO GET OUT OF POSTNATAL DEPRESSION
- Contact your therapist or tell your neurologist about your condition.
If these specialists do not help you, talk to others. Try to find someone who can understand you and give you the right treatment.
This may include psychotherapy sessions and medication. There are treatments that you can use regardless of whether you are breastfeeding or not. The right treatment is sure to help you.
- Talk to friends or family.
You do not have to suffer alone. In the postnatal period, all women need support, and even more so if you have mental problems.
- Have a good meal.
Of course, having a newborn in your arms is not easy! I give my patients this advice: be kind to yourself. Ask your friends or family for help. If this is not possible, buy ready-made healthy food – it is not a problem today. A healthy diet will make you feel better – and there is no need to be remorse – this is not the time for diets!
- Rest and exercise.
Lack of sleep has a negative impact on your mood. And although having a newborn baby is very difficult to find time to rest, it is necessary to do so. In the first three months after giving birth, I always took a nap with my babies. Hiking, light swimming and special postpartum gymnastics (under the guidance of a specialist) also have a beneficial effect on my health. But to strive as soon as possible to return to its former form is not worth it.
It is important not to overdo it and do not start too early. Particular caution should be exercised when doing exercises for pelvic floor muscles, especially if you were injured during childbirth or had a C-section.
